Active Life Buggy Fitness

Opportunities for Mothers to be Active

Buggy Fitness Classes are delivered as part of the Active Mums offer at Active Life. Funded through Active Essex Find Your Active grant, the sessions provide a great way to encourage local mums to get outside, get active and socialise with others.

Research has previously suggested that mums with babies find it difficult to exercise with their and spend a considerable amount of time caring and looking after others. Active Life wanted to offer local mums in South Essex the opportunity to get active, without the barrier of needing to find child-care. Parents quickly become role models for their babies and the Buggy Fitness Classes ensure children see their mums enjoy exercise from an early age – hopefully inspiring parents to create an active lifestyle for their children as they grow up.

The Buggy Fitness Classes are just one element of the offer Active Life provide for women, mums and girls. Active life has expert level knowledge of South Essex and the community and are a national award-winning organisation for community engagement. Active Life lead the way when it comes to engaging women and girls in exercise and physical activity, with their sessions catering for the community need. The atmosphere their staff create, helps participants engage in activity in a non-judgemental, helpful and positive environment that keep them coming back.

Active Essex continues to strengthen the relationship with Active Life by supporting and working with them on a number of projects within the community. The Buggy Fitness Classes have been a great way for the Find Your Active campaign to support the community as society returns to a new normal after Covid-19. With many sessions taking place outside, participants felt comfortable in getting active whilst staying socially distanced.

Despite a great knowledge of their local area, Active Life have found the project has been better received in some parks, than others, but continue to want to build relationships locally. They have started to work with a local primary school which backs onto some beautiful green space, to encourage mums to attend with the support of a local children and family hub.

As a mum myself, I know that we always spend time looking after someone else, and it’s classes such as Buggy Fitness, which gives that space to have a bit of ‘me time'.
