Levelling Up Health and Wellbeing

Move it or Lose it

Classes in Thundersley & Hadleigh

Move it or Lose it are fun fitness classes for locals over the age of 50. It was identified that there were a lack of opportunities offered to the over 50’s in the area, in terms of low impact activity, so these classes were set up to ensure a qualified instructor could bring people together through the programme.

Many participants had previously had knee or hip replacements, whilst some were returning to exercise after cancer. Although some had no physical disabilities, the classes helped motivate them to leave the house or have respite for caring for a partner. The classes were designed to benefit participants' wellbeing through physical activity and social connections.

Group 1
Who is it for?
Over 50’s looking to maintain or gain mobility and flexibility
Goal 1
Prime Objective:
to create a safe environment for people to explore activity
Goal 2
Second Objective:
to encourage new friendships and reduce social isolation

Active Essex have supported the Move it or Lose it group by providing funding via the Find Your Active small grants. Members of the Active Essex team have actively attended the sessions and been involved in their development, which has made a difference not only to the instructor but the community as well. Social media posts have also been shared across the Active Essex channels, which has encouraged residents to find classes and showcased the brilliant work of the instructors across Essex.

The programme has provided participants with time away from their usual environment and schedule, to gain mobility and flexibility which will improve their physical wellbeing and also provide them with new skills and knowledge in terms of low impact exercises they can try from home. The social aspect and the friendships developed over time has helped reduce social isolation, which in turn has had a positive impact on their mental wellbeing.

I really appreciate the opportunity and support received from Active Essex to help more people to find an activity they enjoy and bring people together. Their financial support helped get these sessions started, offering support to the community.
