Community Engagement Co-ordinator

The Community Engagement Co-Ordinator (CEC) post was set up in 2022 to ensure there was a link between public health and leisure. This was achieved by offering the Witham community a safe and inclusive space at Witham Leisure Centre where people can build connections and improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

A key part of the CEC role is managing the Active Rewards Exercise Referral Scheme which offers local residents with a Fusion Leisure card that’s loaded with credits. These credits can be exchanged for gym or swimming classes. The Active Rewards scheme has since become more established in the four Fusion sites across the Braintree district.

Active Essex and the Active Braintree Foundation have worked alongside Fusion CEC to develop and expand the scheme. This expansion has created a collaborative culture, allowing for impactful health and wellbeing work. Productive pathways for service users have also strengthened the funding streams.

There have been a significant number of referrals from frontline public health organisations such as Barnardos Child and Family wellbeing service and this has increased collaboration with Social Prescribing teams. It has allowed for new families to join and be introduced to a positive health culture which is supported by Fusion.

Local residents with long term health conditions have been attending and the CEC has had reports that participants mobility, resilience and fitness has improved and seen a reduction in social isolation, reflecting the many positive effects the scheme has had.

I am going to the gym three times a week and doing swimming sessions and racquet sports in between. I miss the gym on the days I don’t go and look forward to each session. I’m gradually building up my routine, pushing myself a little further each time, but listening to my body when it’s telling me I need to take a break and rest.
