The PoolPod
Accessible pool lift at Basildon Sporting Village
The project consisted of purchasing a PoolPod for the Basildon Sporting Village (BSV), to enable residents with a disability or mobility issue to access the swimming pool with ease.
A pool pod is a lift which is fitted to the side of the pool to allow individuals living with dementia, long term physical, sensory, intellectual, and mental health conditions to now access swimming on an equal basis to their peers.
Since its installation at the end of January 2023, the PoolPod offers an alternative method to enter the pool, consisting of hoists for individuals with reduced mobility, reducing the amount of support required from carers, helping increase independence.
Sport for Confidence are long-standing partners of Basildon Sporting Village, requested the PoolPod to help their participants access the pool. The Essex Local Delivery Pilot funded the project, to provide independent and comfortable access to the pool, helping more people with limited mobility to swim.
The PoolPod has helped continue to develop a community within Basildon Sporting Village by providing an appropriate environment which health and social care professionals can access and deliver therapeutic interventions for individuals through physical activity and sport.
