Thurrock and Brentwood Mind

Raising Mental Health Awareness

Active Thurrock commissioned Thurrock and Brentwood Mind to deliver “Mental health awareness training for sport and physical activity” for frontline staff, volunteers and coaches delivering in Thurrock.

Active Essex made funding available to help bridge local relationships between Active Thurrock, Thurrock and Brentwood Mind and the physical activity workforce. Through this partnership Active Essex have ensured physical activity is embedded in everyday business at Thurrock and Brentwood Mind, whilst also ensuring an increase in mental health awareness across the two districts. It has been key to have a mental health expert sitting on the Active Thurrock Network to ensure the importance of physical activity on resident’s mental health remains a focus.

The course was initially delivered in person, prior to moving the offer online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but this in turn allowed more participants to be able to attend. I now have a better understanding of the positive connection between physical activity and mental wellbeing. I now, not only take my own mental health more seriously, but am more confident talking to my participants and adapting my activities around their mental health.
