Women Like Us Festival – Hamstel, Southend

First ever festival

The first series of Women Like Us festivals, delivered by Active Essex’s This Girl Can Essex ambassadors, took place in Southend and saw over 100 females take part.

Developing the relationship already built with Active Lives in Southend and the Southend ambassadors, the Women Like Us festival highlighted the importance of physical activity among females in the district, but also how to have fun whilst doing so. Active Lives exceptional experience made them the ideal delivery partners for this activity as they were able to effectively organise, support and utilise their communication network to publicise the activity further.

Group 1
Who is it for?
Females in and around Southend
Goal 1
Prime Objective:
to show participants physical activity can be social and fun
Goal 2
Second Objective:
to raise awareness of the This Girl Can campaign

The taster event took place at Hamstel Junior School in Southend and focused on celebrating women being active. By creating a festival that catered for all abilities, it ensured the environment was suitable to encourage both those who were active to try out different activities and those who were inactive, to join in sessions they felt comfortable doing so. The festival was a great chance to build relationships with local residents and organisations and promote local opportunities for the women to be further involved, outside of the festival.

Activities such as, Clubbercise and Zumba to Boxercise and Yoga were on offer, with follow up information on where to join these activities in the community, whilst free health checks were offered by ACE Healthy Lifestyles.

It was fantastic to host the first ever This Girl Can Essex Festival and celebrate Women’s Fitness and Health. Everyone that came along had lots of fun and got a good feel of all the activities available on their doorstep as well as experiencing what a friendly and supportive community we are.
